The most celebrated modern folk band in the UK, Lau are from both Scotland and England, formed in 2005.

Named after an Orcadian word meaning “natural light” (although deliberately misspelled it from “lowe”), LAU formed in Edinburgh in 2006 and were quickly hailed as a band of rare innovation and invention. Consisting of Martin Green (accordion and electronics), Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle, fx) and Kris Drever (vocals, guitars), for a decade they have been stretching folk music’s boundaries further and exploring new musical territory with each release and concert tour.

Brilliant musicians, thrilling performers, free-thinking visionaries and all-round good chaps as well, it’s little wonder Lau are regarded as the epicentre of the new folk boom. And they’ve got shelves groaning with awards (BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners, Best Band of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, Album of the Year 2015 by The Herald), a forest’s worth of ecstatic reviews and breathless plaudits from excited audiences in various outposts of the world ringing in their ears to prove it.

Lau’s sound is pure Lau, who are steeped in tradition, simultaneously enthralled by the extended soundscapes made possible by effects, samples, multilayered composition and all manner of music that they listen to in their spare time. They are hardly the first folk band to muck about with form, but what makes the Lau brand so successful – aside from each member being a formidable performer in his own right – is the way they distill their heritage and build an expansive ensemble sound buzzing with pop, improvisation, electronica and classical influences.

“Lau are a remarkable band – the most musically adventurous trio in British folk exquisite and hypnotic, musicianship at its best.” – The Guardian

One of the front-line new young heroes of Brit-folk from the Scottish isle of Orkney, Kris Drever of LAU will also be opening the tour with his solo material. Kris’ gently relaxed singing, dexterous guitar accompaniments, and subtly inventive arrangements have struck a chord with a new young audience searching for music of roots, substance, and identity. The son of Ivan Drever (singer with folk-rockers Wolfstone), Kris moved to Edinburgh as a teenager and became popular in the folk music scene there, and has played in a variety of inventive and unique music projects since then.
